Quick how-tos for EAT in the flok app

Updated over 5 months ago

What can I do in Eat?

  • Look up food: search by food name or brand to find an item and the protein, calorie, and amino acid content relevant to your flok condition

  • Add foods to your Favorites list for easy access

  • Track your diet in four simple ways: learn more below

  • Find food: search for restaurants and stores near you that feature low-protein food items

  • Add foods and recipes to your own personal lists. If you create a food or recipe, only users on your account can access it.

What information can I see about foods in the flok app?

All foods in the flok app database contain unrounded protein (to 0.1g), calories, serving weight (except for some recipes) and the amino acids shown below (to 1mg). Which amino acids you’ll see depends on your flok condition.

Organic Acidemias and Urea Cycle Disorders see only unrounded protein.

HCU: methionine
MSUD: isoleucine, leucine, valine
PKU & Tyrosinemia: phenylalanine

How do I set up food tracking?

If you didn’t set up food tracking during initial account creation – or if you need to set it up for another profile – tap on the bird avatar at the top left, select Manage Profiles, then tap the profile you’d like to edit. At present, only profiles with a flok condition can set up food tracking.  Select the Food Tracking button and enter the tracking method (protein or, for PKU or TYR, phe) and the daily goal for protein, phe (if applicable), calories, and PE (protein equivalent).  Individuals with PKU or TYR can also opt to use the Simplified Diet.

How do I search for foods?

On the main food page, enter a food name and/or a brand name into the search box. Search results show in the dropdown and are refined as you type. You can select from the dropdown, tap Enter or the search icon, and see the full list of results. By default, the search looks through foods and recipes to find what you’re looking for.

To search for locations (stores and restaurants), select Locations from the drop-down menu next to the main search field.

You’ll also see trending foods (new additions and updates) on the Today screen.

How do I track foods?

Make sure you are in a profile with food tracking enabled. There are four ways to add foods to your food log:

  • Line-item: record foods you eat by weight, protein content, or serving and add them to your food log. First, from the Eat section, search for a food and tap on it in the list of search results. On the food detail page, enter the amount consumed (either in units – e.g. “chips” or grams) and tap the record button.

  • Quick tally: Swipe down from the top of the screen and tap the plus sign to record your intake quickly and easily.  Tap the plus sign to increase the amount of protein (or phe) you’d like to record. The values represent the daily tolerance divided by 20. To accept the value shown, tap save. To edit the value to be more precise, tap More and change the value. You can add details—including the food or meal name, calories, etc. If you like, but these values are not required.

    • Photo log: Swipe down from the top of the screen, tap the plus sign, and then tap More to record details of what you eat, or take or upload a picture of your meal.

  • Quicktracking: Swipe from on a food from a list or search results will allow you to quickly record a serving of that food to your diet log.

  • Multitracking: Press and hold on an item in the food log from a previous say or from your lists, a checkbox will appear to have the option to track more than one item at a time to the food log in bulk.

Do I have to set up food tracking?

You do not have to set up food tracking. If you’re not interested in tracking your diet, you can skip it entirely. You will see a screen each time you visit Eat that reminds you that to track food you’ll need to set it up in your profile. But you can tap Just Browsing and continue to search for foods, locations, and recipes.

Can I track food if I don’t have a flok condition?

Currently, only those on a low-protein diet for a flok metabolic condition can track their food in the flok app. We’ve had requests for everyone to be able to track. If that interests you, visit our roadmap and vote on that feature.  The flok app food database currently has ~10,000 primarily low-protein foods, although we continue to add higher-protein options.

I use tube feeds. How can I record this?

Build a Recipe: go to Eat and tap the plus sign at the top right and pick Build a Meal that contains the ingredients delivered via the tube. At present, water must be measured in grams (equivalent to mls). You can add all the ingredients and save as a custom formula. Then, for each bolus, record the appropriate amount of the formula. We realize it will be useful to record which meals are delivered by tube, and which orally, and have added that feature to our roadmap. For a more in-depth explanation visit our EAT user guide.

I follow the Simplified Diet. How can I record this?

If you have a PKU or Tyrosinemia profile and opt to use the Simplified Diet, this can be configured under Manage Profile. You can track specific foods as Simplified and the protein in those foods will not count toward your daily goal. You can also request that the flok app recognize certain foods as Simplified, though that is subject to review and approval by our staff dietitian.

How do I add a user food?

In the Eat section, tap the plus sign at the top right, and from the panel that appears at the bottom of the page, tap Add Food. Enter as much information as you have on the food. If you do not enter amino acid values, they will be calculated for you based on these ratios. Make sure to ask your clinical team to verify values for foods you’ve added.

Where do I find foods I’ve added?

In the Eat section, tap Lists and then use the toggle to select User Foods.

Can I add a recipe?

Yes! In the EAT section, tap on the plus sign at the top right, and from the panel that appears at the bottom of the page, tap Build a Meal. Search for and add as many ingredients as necessary and when you’re done, you can enter the number of servings, serving size, and additional details.  For a more in-depth explanation visit our EAT user guide.

How can I request protein or amino acid data on a new food?

In the flok app EAT screen there is a link "Can't find a food?". Click that and you can request from right there in the app!

How do I report a change in a food’s information?

On the food detail screen, tap the Report Changes button and fill out the form.
